You really are not aware of how many things you touch, or breathe on, or come into contact with UNTIL you start trying to disinfect them! On Monday, I was determined to “deep clean” before Tom came home from the hospital. I’ve cleaned and sprayed disinfectant over the last week, but it was just going to be me here, so I wasn’t too worried about it, but on that day, things changed. On that day, someone else might be affected by the germs, so on that day, I DEEP cleaned. I tried to clean every surface I might have touched or even breathed on, every door knob, flat surface, remote control, device, toothbrush (okay, those I threw away), but you get the picture. It really felt like an impossible task.Just before I started this task, I read scripture for next week’s lesson. In Philippians Chapter 2, verse 14-15, it says “Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and HARMLESS” That’s what I was doing, right? Trying to make sure that my home was harmless? I wanted to be sure that when others come back into my home…my husband, my children and grandchildren, my parents… they wouldn’t have to be surrounded by germs that could cause them harm! But man! There are a LOT of places to clean!Isn’t that the same with our daily lives? Don’t we want our witness to be blameless and harmless? Don’t we want others to be welcome into our space without fear of the “germs” that can negatively affect them? Do we do ALL things without complaining or disputing so that we can be blameless and harmless? I mean, I think we try don’t we? We never set out to be a complainer or to cause unrest with others, but sometimes we neglect those little cracks and crevices. Sometimes we forget that we have to clean the handle on the soap dispenser and not just the large, flat surface of the bathroom vanity. (Sorry, I’m probably getting too carried away with my cleaning metaphor)My point is this. Sometimes we THINK that we are doing all things without complaining or disputing, but there are small things we can do that grow into large things in the eyes of others and when that happens, we cannot be found blameless and harmless. Maybe it’s complaining about traffic as you ride to lunch with a co worker, maybe it’s rolling our eyes when our boss says something, or insisting that things get done a certain way without considering others feelings (or interests). Sometimes it turns us into a stumbling block to others. So, let’s ask God to reveal to us the ways we are hindering our ability to share HIS love with those around us. Remember, Jesus (and germs) are everywhere!
